The Future Performance of Several MEMS Sensor

Friday,Mar 15,2013

With the rapid development of mobile devices, especially smartphone and Tablet PC, as well as Internet of Things entering market-introduction phase, sensor industry will ushers in the golden development period. For instance, in the next five years, China’s sensor market will see 31% compound annual growth rate.

According to market research firm IHS iSuppli, the following categories of sensor will show bright development outlook:

1. MEMS motion sensor is projected to achieve double-digit growth at 13% in 2013, due to the strong promotion effect of smartphone and media tablets; in addition, this double-digit increase momentum will continue in 2014 and 2015; the revenue in 2016 will come in at $2.21 billion.

2. Pressure sensors that can help with indoor navigation came to greater prominence in 2012 as Samsung adopted the MEMS device in high-end smartphones more aggressively than expected. After Samsung, Sony and other smaller handset manufacturers, such as Xiaomi from China, also started equipping smartphones with pressure sensors.

3. Combo sensor market will enjoy fast growth. In terms of revenue, approximately 16% of motion sensors were shipped as part of a combo sensor in 2012, up from just 3% in 2011, on the way to 53% by 2016. Six-axis inertial measurements units (IMU) comprising a 3-axis accelerometer and a 3-axis gyroscope in the same package will be the most popular combo sensor, ahead of 6-axis compasses and 9-axis IMUs.

4. Currently, the catchiest field may be the CMOS image sensor whose revenue is expected to reach $10.88 billion with compound annual growth rate from 2011 to 2016 at 13.4%, due to the multiple embedded digital imaging applications including touch-screen smartphone, Tablet PC as well as automotive, medical device and security network devices.
