Qualcomm launches breakthrough 5G new air interface millimeter wave for mobile terminals

Tuesday,Jul 24,2018

Qualcomm announced the world's first fully integrated 5G new air interface (5G NR) millimeter wave and below 6GHz RF modules for smartphones and other mobile devices.

The Qualcomm® QTM052 millimeter wave antenna module series and the Qualcomm® QPM56xx 6 GHz RF module series can be combined with the Qualcomm® X50 5G modem to provide modem-to-antenna and cross-band multi-band Features and support for compact package sizes for mobile terminal integration.

Qualcomm Incorporated President Christiano Amon said: "The first commercial 5G new air interface millimeter wave antenna module for smartphones and other mobile terminals and the RF module below 6GHz are released today. This is an important milestone in the mobile industry. Qualcomm The forward-looking investment in 5G enables us to offer the industry a mobile millimeter-wave solution that was once considered unachievable, as well as a fully integrated RF solution below 6 GHz. Currently, this type of modem from RF to RF and across millimeter waves and 6 GHz Solutions in the following bands are enabling mobile 5G networks and terminals, especially smartphones, to be ready to support large-scale commercial use. With the advent of 5G, consumers can expect to enjoy gigabit network rates on their terminals. And with unprecedented responsiveness, these will continue to revolutionize the mobile experience."

Millimeter-wave signals have not been used in mobile wireless communications to date due to numerous technical and design challenges. These challenges cover almost every aspect of end-of-line engineering, including materials, form factor, industrial design, thermal and radiant power regulatory requirements. In view of this, many people in the mobile industry believe that the application of millimeter waves in mobile terminals and networks is impractical and unrealizable.

The QTM052 millimeter wave antenna module works in tandem with the Opteron X50 5G modem to form a complete system to meet the enormous challenges of millimeter waves. As a complete system, it supports advanced beamforming, beam steering and beam tracking techniques to significantly improve the coverage and reliability of millimeter-wave signals. The system includes an integrated 5G new air interface radio transceiver, power management IC, RF front-end components and phased antenna array, and is available at 26.5-29.5 GHz (n257) and full 27.5-28.35 GHz (n261) and 37-40 GHz ( Supports up to 800MHz bandwidth on the n260) millimeter wave band. Most importantly, the QTM052 module integrates all of these features into a compact package size that supports up to four QTM052 modules in a single smartphone. This will enable OEMs to continually optimize the industrial design of their mobile terminals and help them develop mobile terminals that are aesthetically pleasing and have ultra-high-speed millimeter-wave 5G air-to-air, and support these terminals to be launched in the first half of 2019.

Millimeter waves are suitable for providing 5G coverage in dense urban areas and crowded indoor environments, while extensive coverage of 5G new airspace will be achieved through the frequency band below 6 GHz. In view of this, the QPM56xx RF module series (including QPM5650, QPM5651, QDM5650 and QDM5652) can help smartphones equipped with Opteron X50 5G modems to support 5G new air ports in the frequency band below 6GHz. The QPM5650 and QPM5651 include an integrated 5G new air interface power amplifier (PA) / low noise amplifier (LNA) / switch and filtering subsystem. The QDM5650 and QDM5652 include an integrated 5G new air interface low noise amplifier/switch and filtering subsystem to support diversity and MIMO technology. All four modules support integrated channel sounding reference signal (SRS) switching to provide optimal massive MIMO applications and support 3.3-4.2 GHz (n77), 3.3-3.8 GHz (n78) and 4.4-5.0 GHz ( N79) Band below 6 GHz. These RF modules below 6 GHz provide mobile terminal manufacturers with a feasible path to support 5G new air interface massive MIMO technology in mobile terminals.

At present, the QTM052 millimeter wave antenna module series and the QPM56xx 6GHz or lower RF module series are being sampled to customers.
