Of Inverters And Transistors

Tuesday,Oct 07,2014

It is a fact that the world is full of terminologies that is common to others but may not seem very simple and familiar to some others. Like in the world of electronics, their jargon is much too complex to be understood by someone who is not into chips and microchips. So here is a look at two of the most commonly abused words but are not widely understood by many.

What Is An Inverter?

An inverter is basically a device that can convert Direct Current (DC) power into a standard Alternating Current (AC) in order to operate machineries and other electrical equipment with the use of power produced by a boat or car battery. It can also make use of renewable power sources like solar panels and wind turbines. In a sense, the DC power found in batteries is converted into AC in order to use equipment.

What Is A Transistor?

A transistor, on the other hand, is a semiconductor device that can amplify and switch electronic signals and electrical power. It can be seen in integrated circuits though today, transistors are packaged individually.

There are three terminals in a transistor that can be used to connect to an external circuit.

What Are The Uses Of The Inverter?

The inverter is very important especially if you go on trips or camping. It is usually a rectangular device that you can safely plug into your car’s cigarette lighter. It’s practical uses include:

  1. Providing power when you are outside the house. When you go camping, it is a convenient source of power where you can plug in your devices like chargers, small fridge and other devices.
  2. In times of power outages during typhoons and earthquakes, the inverter comes in really handy. Just plug it into the cigarette lighter of the car and then you can start using your electrical appliances. Just make sure you do not overload your inverter to prevent overloading and explosion.
  3. Larger inverters are very useful too in the sense that these can be used to convert solar or wind energy into alternating current.

What Are The Uses Of The Transistor?

The transistor can be useful in the following ways:

  1. Transistors can be used to amplify sound such as in cell phones, radios, guitar amplifiers, and TVs. High-fidelity sound is produced for better experiences.
  2. It is also useful in your computer through the invention of the Integrated Circuit or IC. Each IC has millions of transistors and wiring that can be placed in one small chip.

With that, you now know that transistors and inverters are things that are commonly used in most of your gadgets and equipment.
