Get Rid Of Your Discarded Laptop Batteries The Safe Way

Tuesday,Dec 23,2014

Today, you often hear about campaigns to save the environment. This is so because there is already a fast-growing mass of e-waste all over the world. And if you believe that regular waste disposal is a problem, then think 10 times more when speaking about e-waste.

What Is E-Waste?

The term comes from the words ‘electronic’ and ‘waste’ put together. This consists of discarded electrical or electronic devices which, when not disposed properly, can lead to harmful chemicals that can spread in the ecosystem. This is so because contaminated electronic assemblies contain lead, cadmium and mercury which can enter the food chain and have adverse effects on humans, plants, and animals. Therefore, they should not just be thrown away but must be recycled and reused.

How To Dispose Your Discarded Laptop Batteries

Now that you are aware of the dangers improper disposal of discarded batteries can cause to the environment, then you need to know the following important tips to get rid of them.

  1. Recycle them. Recycling here does not mean using it again on another computer because that does not solve the problem. However, as already mentioned, you should recycle the batteries first to make sure that they do not leak of chemicals. Go can go to recycling services in your district or county and they can take care of your batteries. You can also recycle them at the local retailers as they can buy them from you. Another option is to go to community centers, town halls, and other facilities that handle such matter.
  2. Bring them to stores. Some of you may not be aware but you can also bring your old batteries to stores that sell these batteries. The best thing is that if your state has this rechargeable battery law, stores have to take your e-waste even if your batteries were not bought from that particular store. However, you can also go to Staples and Best Buy to recycle your discarded batteries.
  3. Make use of your manufacture’s recycling program. Who could better handle the disposal of your discarded laptop batteries than your computer’s manufacturer? You can g online and check their websites about how they can help you with disposing your e-waste. Brands like Apple, Lenovo, Acer, Hewlett Packard, Sony and Toshiba, however, use the Call2Recycle program.
  4. Use the Call2Recycle program. The Call2Recycle program is dedicated to collect and recycle batteries. They set up collection points in different counties and towns across the United States. So if you happen to hear that your county is a part of this program, then you can ask your local authorities about it. If not, you can go to a store that is connected to the Call2Recycle program.
  5. Use the online collection service. If all else fails, then you can go online and check online recycling companies. They will charge you except for the shipping fee.

Help save the environment by disposing your e-waste properly and avoid contamination of electronic assemblies.
