The Internet of Things (IOT): Artificial Intelligence Technology

Thursday,Apr 02,2015

There is no denying how advanced our technology is today, especially on the issue of the internet. This is seen as a very positive thing because everyone needs the help of the internet in order to make a lot of things possible like communication and transportation. However, the question on the invention of the Artificial Intelligence or AI is a really good thing is here and needs some answers.

What Is Artificial Intelligence?

AI, from the name itself, is about intelligence or the ability of computer systems to mimic the intelligence and behaviour of humans. This can vary from recognizing speech and visual perceptions up to translating languages and making decisions. More than that is the fact that AI computers can perform processes and actions without needing human intervention. This means that if faced with an obstacle, the computer can reprogram itself without the aid or prompt of any human being. All these are according to the website of The Guardian (http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2015/feb/20/internet-of-things-artificially-intelligent-stephen-hawking-spike-jonze).

Should We Be Concerned About AI?

At the moment, not everyone is familiar with what it can bring to human lives. However, there are experts who believe that there is reason to be fearful of the arrival of the AI. Foremost, physicist Stephen Hawking says that the development of the AI will “spell the end of the human race”. Elon Musk, a tech entrepreneur, says that playing around with the Artificial Intelligence is just like “summoning the devil” and that developing it is the “greatest threat to our existential life”. Furthermore is Bill Gates who says that AI might be too difficult for humans to control.

Meanwhile, the head of the research lab of the Microsoft company says otherwise. Eric Horvitz believes that humans will not lose control over certain kinds of intelligences and may even gain a lot of advantages including in the aspects of science, economics and education even. Although, Horvitz also acknowledges the fact that the advances of AI can actually bring impacts to society and pose threats.

AI Into The IoT (Internet of Things)?

Artificial intelligence is said to work better with the Internet of Things (IoT). IoT is described to be the emerging objects, animals, and people who have uniquely identifiable devices that are embedded in them and then connected to the internet. These devices allow them to receive and transmit information or data without the help of humans. It is even believed that by 2020, there will be about 50 billion devices that will be connected to one another.

The coiner of the Web 2.0, Tim O’Reilly, believes that IoT is the best and most important online development of today and that it should be instead called “human augmentation” instead of IoT.

The two sides are contradicting. It is my guess that we all just have to wait and see what happens when AI and IoT come.
