Infineon Launches New Switched Capacitor Intermediate Bus Converters for Flex Power Modules

Sunday,Sep 19,2021

Recently, Flex Power Modules launched BMR310-a non-isolated switched capacitor intermediate bus converter (IBC), which can provide high power density power supply for data centers, thereby increasing the utilization of circuit board space and freeing up space for other components. BMR310 is based on Infineon Technologies' (FSE: IFX / OTCQX: IFNNY) proprietary zero-voltage switched-capacitor converter (ZSC) technology, which achieves an efficiency of more than 98% at half load and can be built in a compact Continuously provide up to 875W of power in the package. It operates in an input voltage range of 40 V to 60 V, and provides a voltage output from 10 V to 15 V in a variable ratio.

For data center and high-performance computing (HPC) applications, there is a growing trend, that is, the power supply voltage is gradually shifting from 12 V to 48 V to reduce distribution current and power loss. To meet this growing demand, Infineon ZSC provides the highest efficiency and power density for applications that use 48 V to generate intermediate bus voltages. This is achieved through capacitive energy transmission and soft switching of power MOSFETs, thus providing a simple and low-risk way for traditional 12 V systems to switch to 48 V, and greatly reducing the total cost of ownership (TCO) of the system.

Mikael Appelberg, Chief Technology Officer of Flex Power Modules, said: "Infineon’s ZSC topology is a significant change in the power distribution field, allowing us to provide the high efficiency and high power density that data centers require now and in the future."

Richard Kuncic, Vice President of Infineon’s Power and Sensor Systems Division and General Manager of DC/DC, said: “By promoting cooperation within the industry and using our system knowledge, we optimize our devices with the end application as the center. We are proud We can see that our partners can use our technology to design breakthrough system solutions."

BMR310 is installed horizontally with a height of 10.3 mm, which is suitable for systems with limited space due to large radiators or cold plates. Its dimensions are 58.4 mm x 25.0 mm x 10.3 mm (2.3 x 0.98 x 0.41 in3). The current installation option is pedestal installation, but in the future new models will provide an open architecture.

In order to maximize the working life, BMR310 provides over-voltage, under-voltage, over-current and over-temperature protection functions. Like all DC/DC converters of Flex Power Modules, it complies with the IEC/EN/UL 62368-1 safety standard.

If necessary, multiple converters can be combined through passive load sharing to provide higher power. The BMR310 is compatible with the Flex Power Designer software tool, and the new converter includes a PMBus interface for digital control.
