LED Lighting Becomes the Mainstream of LED Industry

Tuesday,Jul 30,2013

In the field of LED industry, LED backlight develops faster than other sectors with market penetration reaching nearly 80%, due to the application in cellphone and TV. However, driven by government support as well as continuous price dropping, LED lighting has officially replaced the LED backlight to become the main driving force of LED industry.

Comparing with LED backlights, the current penetration rate of LED lighting is around 10%; but it is expected LED lighting to achieve revenue of one trillion while LED backlight may amount to one hundred billion. Given the energy-saving requirement, LED lighting will see large-scale of application in a lot of fields, such as house, automotive, commercial and landscape lighting. And outdoor area is set to be the first explosive market.

Chu Yuchao, analyst in LEDinside said “2013 to 2015 is the replacement tide period for global LED outdoor lighting. Driven by policy support, LED street lights and tunnel lights will be installed largely in Asian region where China, Japan and Taiwan market performs most actively. In addition, Thailand, Russia, Latin America and Africa as well as other emerging markets also will usher in large-scale street light replacement.” And LEDinside forecasts the annual growth rate of outdoor lighting worldwide will come to over 29%.

LED commercial lighting is another main contributor for LED lighting. Take the American region as an example, the non-home construction growth and the implementation of subsidy projects bring opportunity to LED commercial lighting. Based on LEDinside, the market capacity of global LED commercial lighting is projected to reach $ 10,809 million; further to $ 16,818 million in 2015.

Despite the market prospect, there are still obstacles affecting the expansion of LED lighting. According to a survey by LEDinside, among 3000 reporters, only 25% know LED bulb. The low awareness makes LED lighting expanding into rural region and home market a long way, which poses requirement for continuing promotion of LED bulbs. More, the fierce competition and serious oversupply of LED products leads to sharp price decline, to several dollars; but there is a fact that the price is still high for common consumers comparing with incandescent. Therefore, continuous price dropping is needed for larger application markets.

In addition, Chu also pointed out another problem for LED industry: the increased light efficiency and extended life results in the decrease of potential demand, so LED market should warn another round oversupply.
