Amidst increasingly fierce competition in the global semiconductor industry, South Korean tech giant Samsung Electronics is further increasing its investment in the Vietnamese market. Reports indicate that Samsung plans to invest $4 billion in Thai Nguyen province in northern Vietnam to build a chip packaging and testing plant, with an initial investment of $2 billion.
This strategic investment will be implemented in phases, aiming to strengthen Samsung's manufacturing base in Southeast Asia. As one of the foreign-invested enterprises in Vietnam, Samsung established a factory in Bac Ninh province as early as 2008 and a smartphone production base in Thai Nguyen province in 2013. To date, Samsung's cumulative investment in Vietnam has exceeded $23.2 billion, creating approximately 90,000 jobs.
Advanced chip packaging technology is becoming a key area of ??competition in the global semiconductor industry. With the rapid development of artificial intelligence technology, the demand for high-performance chips in data centers and various AI terminal devices continues to rise. This investment is seen as an important measure for Samsung to meet market demand and consolidate its supply chain advantages.
The Vietnamese government has confirmed that it is in discussions with Samsung regarding a memorandum of understanding for the semiconductor project. In recent years, Vietnam, leveraging its economic growth and well-developed manufacturing sector, has gradually become an important destination for the global electronics supply chain relocation. Samsung's deep involvement in Vietnam has not only attracted a large number of upstream and downstream suppliers but also propelled Vietnam's transformation towards high-value-added manufacturing.
It's worth noting that this is another major investment by Samsung in Vietnam this year. Previously, the company had pledged an additional $1.2 billion for high-end electronic circuit board production in Thai Nguyen province. The newly planned $4 billion chip packaging and testing plant will further enhance Samsung's competitiveness in the global chip supply chain and elevate Vietnam's strategic position as a regional manufacturing hub.
